Harbeth Loudspeaker, Older Than Prince Harry, & Still Audio Royalty

Any music lover with a love for the intricacy and detail of immaculate sound has heard of Harbeth - the monarch of high-fidelity loudspeakers. From its birth in 1977, Harbeth has been innovating within the world of loudspeaker design, truly earning its crown in the 2000s with products such as their Super HL5 and Monitor 30.1 which has since been succeeded by the Monitor 30.2.

Harbeth’s journey to the palace began almost sixty years ago in the United Kingdom, where the talented British engineer Dudley Hardwood dedicated his life to his greatest passion. As head of the BBC’s Loudspeaker Development, Harwood took the principles entrenched in the institution before retiring to make time to begin forming the foundations of Harbeth. This legacy of expertise reverberated through Harbeth’s formative years, pushing the company forward in both status and innovation.

Harbeth’s innovation is arguably its greatest asset, jettisoning the brand into the highest echelons of greatness. As any engineer would know, there is always room for improvement and this is a phrase Harwood and those who followed in his footsteps took to heart. Harbeth’s path to the throne is carved out in polypropylene and academia, as Alan Shaw, Harwood’s successor, constantly strove to improve loudspeaker design. Working closely with government agencies and industry giants, Harbeth innovated past what was physically possible at the time. Thankfully, there came a time when the industry caught up, and Harbeth came to sit on its RADIAL throne.

The details of this technology are enough to make even the greatest sound engineers scratch their heads, but in essence, the RADIAL project sought to produce the pinnacle of resonant material to be used in loudspeaker production. The metal-polymer hybrid used rigid metal for bass punch and a softer, more forgiving polymer for well-damped higher frequencies. This RADIAL technology would become the jewel in Harbeth’s crown, solidifying its status as a powerhouse of sound engineering.

Today, each of Harbeth’s products is a careful, handmade production, representing its legacy of evolution and dedication to quality. From its origin designing loudspeakers for one of the biggest names in television, to its years of research and perfectionism, Harbeth has become a sonic monarch, leading the industry through example. There are many names within the industry today, some older and some younger, but few can boast Harbeth’s legacy of innovation.
